Niagara County Sheriff's Department About the Sheriff's Department |
Your Sheriff - true public servant dedicated to helping people
The Niagara County Sheriff is a highly trained professional who is responsible for maintaining law and order in your community so that you, your family and your neighbors may live and work peacefully and safely.
County Sheriffs and their deputies devote the majority of their time and effort to crime prevention, law enforcement and the administration of criminal justice. In fact, in New York, Sheriffs are at the very heart of the state's criminal justice system.
Sheriffs are the chief law enforcement officers in each county and they are one of only three county officials which the state constitution mandates will be elected by the people. As a result, your Sheriff is accountable only to you, the citizens of his county, and to no one else.
And that's as it should be... your Sheriff was elected to this position precisely because of his concern for your safety, and because of his deep and abiding respect for law and order. He is an individual of outstanding moral integrity who fully appreciates the trust his local electorate has placed in him. When you combine compassion, respect for the law, moral integrity and personal accountability together with extensive training in sophisticated up-to-date law enforcement techniques, it quickly becomes clear that your sheriff is uniquely qualified to maintain the peace in your county.
Professional Law Enforcement in Action
Combating Crime: Your Sheriff's very presence in the community, is, by itself, a major deterrent to crime. Frequent patrols by the Sheriff and his deputies - whether they be road patrols, navigational patrols or routine building security checks - provide a meaningful sense of well being in the community, and make would-be offenders think twice before breaking the law.
When a crime does take place, your Sheriff brings the full weight of his authority and the law to bear... New York State Sheriffs answer literally tens of thousands of calls for assistance every year in cases involving burglary, auto theft and a wide variety of other crimes. The apprehension and arrest rate of criminals by the county Sheriffs is extremely high. That's because Sheriffs have undergone extensive training in state-of-the-art crime fighting and investigation techniques and they remain constantly aware of new methods as they are developed.
Corrections: In addition to being a skilled law enforcement officer, each Sheriff is responsible for the administration of his county's correctional facility (the county jail).
Faced with rising inmate populations, on one hand and concern for the taxpayers' expense on the other, every action the Sheriff takes in administering his facility must fill a need, yet at the lowest possible cost. As a result, Sheriff have developed a keen eye for spotting ways of achieving maximum efficiency in the daily operation of their jails, such as requiring inmates to perform a variety of maintenance functions in and around the jail. Successfully operating the jail in a cost-effective and secure fashion is a responsibility every Sheriff takes very seriously.
Community Involvement: Obviously one of the very best ways to keep the peace is to prevent crime from happening in the first place. It is with that goal in mind that your Sheriff welcomes every opportunity to speak before youth and civic groups throughout the county. Talks on crime prevention frequently cover home and business security, auto security and the safety of our youth.
The health and well being of our state's youth is of particular interest and concern to New York State Sheriffs.... every year the Sheriff's professional association hosts a summer camp for disadvantaged children from across the state. The camp combines summer recreation with programs designed to promote an understanding and respect for our laws and the men and women who enforce them. Each year Sheriffs look forward to nominating children from their respective counties to attend this very special summer camp.
Communications: In most New York state counties, the Sheriff's Office serves as a critical communications center which is responsible for receiving emergency calls from county citizens and dispatching emergency vehicles such as fire, police and ambulances.
