The Niagara County Sheriffs Department Aviation Unit consists of three Bell Jet Ranger helicopters, four pilots and eight tactical flight officers. The unit performs aviation operations in support of the Niagara County Sheriff Department and local police agencies. Typical operations include drug interdiction, search and rescue operations and aerial surveillance. Unit members must pass flight physicals and be trained in a wide variety of equipment that is used during the normal unit operations. Click on the photo above to view it full size.
The three Bell Jet Ranger helicopters were supplied to the Niagara County Sheriffs Department through Project Northstar and are equipped with Night Sun spotlights. These spotlights are rated at 30 million candlepower. The unit is expecting to add forward looking infra-red (FLIR) systems to the helicopters in the near future. The FLIR night vision system works off body heat and acts as a video camera day and night. This equipment would be useful for locating lost people and fleeing subjects.
