The Sheriff is the Chief Law Enforcement Officer for the county. His time is devoted to crime prevention, law enforcement and criminal justice administration including court security, civil enforcement, community services and corrections. The Niagara County Sheriff's Department is an equal opportunity employer.

Deputy Sheriff Correction Officer Sheriff Dispatcher

Eligibility Requirements:
Candidates must meet the following requirements on or before the date of the written test.

DEPUTY SHERIFF:

Residence Requirement: Candidates must be legal residents of Niagara County for at least one (1) month immediately preceding the date of the written examination. Candidates must be residents of the County at time of appointment.

Minimum Qualifications:

AGE: candidates must be at least 19 years of age. Eligibility for appointment from the Civil Service eligible list begins when a candidate reaches his or her 20th birthday.

EDUCATION: applicant must be a high school graduate or a holder of a high school equivalency diploma issued by an education department of any of the states of the United States or a holder of a comparable diploma issued by any commonwealth, territory or possession of the United States or by the Canal Zone or a holder of a report from the United States Armed Forces certifying successful completion of the tests of general education development, high school level. Applicants who do not possess high school equivalency are eligible to take the examination, but will not be eligible for appointment until they obtain an equivalency diploma. AND

Completion of at least sixty (60) credit hours from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

*Section 58.1(a) requires that applicants not be "more than thirty-five years of age as of the date when the applicant takes the written examination." Candidates who may be impacted by the maximum age requirement and who are requesting an alternate test day (for active military duty, Sabbath observance or for an alternate test date situation which meets the conditions of the agency's alternate test date policy) are advised to contact the Niagara County Civil Service Office in writing, submitting relative proof, to address their request.

1. Candidates must be at least 19 years old on or before the date of the examination to take the test. Eligibility for appointment as a Deputy Sheriff begins when the candidate reaches age 20. Candidates who reach their 35th birthday on or before the date of written examination are not qualified except as follows: Candidates may have a period of military duty or terminal leave, up to six years as defined in Section 243 (10-a) of the Military Law, deducted from their age for purposes of determining whether they meet the age requirement.

2. Candidates must meet the medical and physical fitness requirements as prescribed by the New York State Municipal Police Training Council at the time of examination and also at the time of appointment and any additional psychological and/or psychiatric examinations as may be prescribed by the Municipal Civil Service Agency.

3. To be eligible for appointment, candidates must possess an appropriate New York State Driver's License. A COPY OF YOUR LICENSE MUST BE ATTACHED TO YOUR APPLICATION.

4.Candidates must be citizens of the United States at time of appointment in accordance with Article 2, Section 3 of the New York State Public Officer's Law.

5. Candidates must become eligible for a certificate of training issued by the Executive Director of the Municipal Police Training Council and must possess the required certificate within one (1) year of the date of original appointment.

PHYSICAL & MEDICAL: candidates must meet the medical and physical fitness requirements as prescribed by the New York State Municipal Police Training Council at the time of examination and also at the time of appointment and any additional psychological and/or psychiatric examinations as may be prescribed by the Municipal Civil Service Commission. A copy of the physical fitness and medical standards is available upon request from the Civil Service Office.

CANDIDATES WHO PASS THE WRITTEN TEST WILL BE REQUIRED TO PASS A QUALIFYING MEDICAL AND PHYSICAL AGILITY TEST. FAILURE ON EITHER QUALIFYING TEST WILL BAR CANDIDATES FROM APPOINTMENT.

CITIZENSHIP: candidates must be citizens of the United States at the time of appointment in accordance with Article 2, Section 3 of the New York State Public Officer's Law.

DRIVERS LICENSE: to be eligible for appointment, candidates must possess a valid New York State Driver's License. A copy of your license must be attached to your application.

POLICE TRAINING: candidates must become eligible for a certificate of training issued by the Executive Director of the Municipal Police Training Council before appointment or during provisional, probationary or temporary employment as a Deputy Sheriff, and possess same at the time of permanent appointment.

CONVICTION OF A FELONY WILL BAR AND CONVICTION OF A MISDEMEANOR OR OTHER OFFENSE MAY BAR PARTICIPATION IN EXAMINATION AND APPOINTMENT.

CORRECTION OFFICER:
Candidates applying for both this examination and the State Correction Officer Trainee and/or Correction Officer Trainee (Spanish Language) MUST TAKE BOTH EXAMINATIONS at a STATE Test Center. Candidates who are taking both must notify Niagara County of their intention to take the State Examination.

Residence Requirement: Candidates must have been legal residents of Niagara County for at least one (1) month immediately preceding the date of the written examination and must be legal resident of the county at the time of appointment.

Minimum Qualifications:

AGE: candidates must be at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment.

SECURITY CLEARANCE: must have a security clearance by a government agency (FBI, or Sheriff) Security clearance must not be over one (1) year old at the time of appointment.

CITIZENSHIP: candidates must be citizens of the United States at the time of appointment in accordance with Article 2, Section 3 of the New York State Public Officer's Law. By New York State Law, a Correction Officer is a peace officer and must be qualified to hold such and must be a US Citizen.

SHERIFF DISPATCHER:

Residence Requirement: Candidates must have been legal residents of Niagara County for at least one (1) month immediately preceding the date of the written examination and must be legal resident of the county at the time of appointment.

Minimum Qualifications:

EDUCATION: applicant must be a high school graduate or a holder of a high school equivalency diploma issued by an education department of any of the states of the United States or a holder of a comparable diploma issued by any commonwealth, territory or possession of the United States or by the Canal Zone or a holder of a report from the United States Armed Forces certifying successful completion of the tests of general education development, high school level. AND

Two (2) years of clerical experience which included data entry. Data Entry experience is working with computers.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: employee must be certified in Emergency Medical Dispatch within one (1) year after appointment.

Prior to being hired an applicant will also undergo several procedures including a background investigation, oral interviews and a physical. Upon appointment as a Deputy Sheriff, you must successfully graduate from the Police Academy for Criminal Deputy or the Corrections Academy for Corrections Officer. A Criminal Deputy will spend 10 weeks in a field training program working with a Field Training Officer. All personnel are on probation for a period of one year.

As you gain experience, you may apply for other positions within the Department. Some positions may be lateral while others require civil service promotional exams.

After 3 years of service, you are eligible to test for promotion to Sergeant.

After 6 years of service, you are eligible to test for promotion to Captain and Investigator.

Benefits:

Vacation: 10 working days after the first year accumulating up to a maximum of 20.

Personal Leave/Holidays: 3 personal days per year, 13 paid holidays per year, 3 extra days, Military and Bereavement Leave are available.

Sick Leave: 1 sick day per month is earned to a maximum of 210 days

Health Insurance: The county provides employees with health care coverage with a variety of plans including the Niagara Co. Self Insured Health Plan. New employees will contribute 10% per year.

Uniform Maintenance: $400.00 yearly for maintenance.

Retirement Plan: NYS Retirement System, Criminal Deputy - 20 year plan, Correction Deputy - 25 year plan.
