Youth Explorer Program

The Niagara County Sheriff's Department along with the Iroquois Trail Council, B.S.A. co-sponsor the Niagara County Sheriff's Department Law Enforcement Explorer Post 911.

Law enforcement exploring is an opportunity for anyone wanting to learn more about the field of law enforcement to join a post and explore the vast aspects of this exciting career field. Scouting uses this fun program to promote character development, citizenship training, and personal fitness for every member.

Anyone between the ages of 14 and 21 are welcome to take advantage of this unique program. Youths already in scouting programs can also become an explorer. The Niagara County Sheriff's Department Explorer Program meet twice a month - on the second and fourth Mondays, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The program features a Sheriff's ID Card Program on the first of each month. The Explorers assist deputies in preparing ID cards to the general public. Explorers assist in taking pictures, typing cards, and gathering information. On the second meeting, explorers are given hands-on instruction consisting of solving crime scenes, collection of evidence, domestic violence, car stops, accident investigation, and many other tasks performed by deputies. Other activities performed by explorers consist of parking and security details, assisting at various fairs, child fingerprinting, and many other social functions.

The Explorer Program features a ride along program for those who have completed 100 hours of service to the post, enabling members to ride with a road patrol deputy during a 4-12 shift.

The Niagara County Explorer's Program currently has 15 active members and is headed by advisor Deputy Kevin Ketch.
