Communications and alarm systems are a vital link to effective fire service and related public safety activities. Advances in the Enhanced 911 System, along with computer aided dispatch, have spurred the ongoing improvement of the communication control center.
Civil Service status has been given to the department dispatchers and civilian have been placed in these positions since 1997. They are dedicated to their jobs without the added responsibility that the title "Deputy" may bring.
Future plans include the capability of electronically transmitting a hard copy of what was dispatched to the firehalls. Long range plans would address the communication needs for Niagara County into the next century.
The Fire Service is provided by 3 municipal departments, one of which is combination career and volunteer, one military department and 29 volunteer companies. The personnel consists of 1,832 volunteer, 282 paid, and 72 call-in, for a total of 2,186 firefighters. This includes the 221 fire police and 15 scuba divers. Medical services consist of 157 Certified First Responders, 263 Emergency Medical Technicians, 162 Emergency Medical Technicians - Defibrillation, 69 Emergency Medical Technicians - Intermediate, and 35 Emergency Medical Technicians - Paramedic.
The apparatus inventory of the County consists of 130 engines, 21 aerials and telesquirts, 40 tankers, 30 ambulances, and many specialized units, such as boat, rescue, hazmat, brush, etc.
Tim Horanburg is the Deputy Fire Coordinator for Communications.
County sirens and monitors on the County radio system are tested on a weekly basis.
