Niagara County Sheriff's Department

Marine Division

The Marine Division of the Niagara County Sheriff's Departments main objective is boating safety and education, and the enforcement of the New York State Navigation Laws. In addition, the Marine units provide search and rescue capability, pollution control response, and boating manufacture standards compliance. The New York State Parks and Recreation Bureau of Marine Enforcement subsidizes up to seventy five percent of our total operational budget. Our operational area consists of the Erie Barge Canal from Middleport through Lockport to North Tonawanda, the Upper Niagara River to Niagara Falls, the Lower Niagara River to Youngstown, Lake Ontario from Youngstown to Somerset, stretching eighteen miles offshore. The unit utilizes five patrol boats within its 540 square miles of waterway jurisdiction. The navigation season commences on March 1st with the prepping and repair of all equipment and has a launch date targeted for March 15th. The season runs through until the second week of November.
